Modern & Contemporary
Art Gallery

We designed the exhibition space and the graphics for the final permanent gallery at Bihar Museum.

An engaging gallery to showcase contemporary Indian art to Bihar Museum visitors

CLIENT: BIHAR MUSEUM
LOCATION: PATNA, BIHAR
YEAR OF COMPLETION: 2024
INTERPRETIVE PLANNING: BRMA, MUMBAI

At the Bihar Museum in Patna, the permanent galleries present a narrative of Bihar’s cultural and historic legacy. The final permanent gallery traces the transformation of art in post-independence India through five thematic lenses: Transforming Traditions, A New Vocabulary, Global Contemporary, India and the World. Named The Modern & Contemporary Art Gallery, it showcases an eclectic collection of contemporary masters including Anjolie Ela Menon, Satish Gujral, Jatin Das, Thota Vaikuntam, Arpana Caur, Yusuf Arakkal, and Himmat Shah, among others.

We envisioned the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery as a spatial journey and not a static container for artworks. Our central design strategy was to disrupt linearity. Rather than organizing the exhibition in a straightforward, axial sequence, the central spatial axis was subtly rotated. Angled partitions redirected circulation paths, and visitors experience the gallery as a layered and dynamic environment.

As visitors progress, shifts in colour and light create distinct moods, with each theme unfolding with its own atmosphere. Background colours were selected to form lush, resonant backdrops that heightened the emotional and visual impact of the paintings.

Controlled, precise typography maps the curatorial journey, guiding viewers through the evolving story of modern Indian art.

An installation of interactive physical elements that describe each artist invite the visitor to touch, rotate, and learn. The installation is especially popular among the younger visitors to the museum.

To engage younger audiences, we introduced children’s panels placed under selected artwork descriptions within the gallery. These invite close observation, encouraging children to re-imagine selected works, interpret details, and identify elements within the paintings, transforming passive viewing into active discovery.
